When a boat landing king post failed and fell into the water, the safe docking of crew transfer vessels could no longer be guaranteed. mh² coordinated and executed the complete refit, from offshore decommissioning and the fabrication of the modified replacement component to installation, testing, and successful recommissioning.

The challenge

The boat landing is the safety-critical interface between the crew transfer vessel and the offshore platform. Following an overload, the upper shock cell of the left king post was severely deformed. The bearing failed, causing the king post to buckle and fall into the sea. A spot repair was insufficient: the damaged structure had to be dismantled in a controlled manner and replaced entirely.

The specific challenge: decommissioning, fabrication, heavy-lift logistics, and new installation had to be precisely integrated while the platform remained in operation.

Our solution

01 · Planning for safety

Method statements, risk assessments, inspection and welding documentation, as well as lifting and logistics concepts, formed the foundation for every work step.

02 · Controlled decommissioning

Temporary access points, rigging points, and cutting and welding work enabled the safe dismantling of the bridge, king posts, and boat landing. Underwater and lifting operations were monitored by ROV.

03 · Parallel fabrication

The modified replacement boat landing was manufactured to high execution standards (EXC3), tested, coated, and integrated into the offshore logistics chain via the Emden logistics hub.

04 · Precise installation

The large component was erected on the jack-up barge, lifted onto the pile, precisely aligned, and welded. This was followed by bridge assembly, non-destructive testing, and corrosion protection.

05 · Verification of function

A practical push test with a crew transfer vessel confirmed that the landing function had been fully restored.

What made this project special

  • Work on an operational offshore facility with tightly scheduled clearances and limited productive time windows.
  • End-to-end heavy-lift logistics from the manufacturing site via Emden, supply vessel, and jack-up barge to the final installation position.
  • Integrated above- and below-water operations with ROV support during critical lifting phases – adhering to a "zero discharge to sea" policy.
  • High requirements for occupational safety, welding quality, non-destructive testing, and corrosion protection.
  • Time pressure and difficult material availability during the COVID-19 pandemic – planning, procurement, and production were partially carried out in parallel.

The result

The damaged boat landing was completely dismantled and replaced with a modified, newly manufactured structure. The essential assembly, welding, testing, and coating work was completed – with production, transport, dismantling, installation, non-destructive testing, and CTV push test all documented with a 100% completion rate.

The push test with a crew transfer vessel was successful, and the offshore acceptance took place on July 27, 2020. The platform now has a resilient, tested, and fully functional landing structure available for CTV operations – including complete technical documentation covering production, assembly, testing, and acceptance.
